Toronto Draws TinTin!

It was a wonderful turnout at Beguiling's "Toronto Draws TinTin" event last night.

There was some wonderful artwork by some of Canada’s greatest cartooning talents, including Chester Brown, Michael DeForge, Joe Ollmann, Zach Worton, Faith Erin Hicks and our very own Brett Jubinville.

The exhibit, and I believe the silent auction for the pieces, goes on until November 27th. So be sure to pop by the Steamwhistle Brewery at 255 Bremner Boulevard , Toronto, Ontario and place your bid.  Its for a very good cause.

Art Clokey, Pokey and Gumby

You may have noticed today that Google has launched a clay inspired logo featuring the characters of Pokey and Gumby, all in honor of what would have been Art Clokey's 90th birthday.

While doing your Google searching today, check it out. Gumby is standing with several balls of clay. Clicking each one springs a different character to life.

If you get a chance today, visit YouTube to watch some of the Pokey and Gumby cartoons.  I remember watching them as a kid. They were one of the reasons I got into Stop motion in the first place.

You can learn more about Art Clokey on his Wikipedia page too.

6 days to air

If you haven't seen it yet, check out '6 Days To Air', the documentary about how they get South Park to air.

6 days...

Good. Lord.

Awesome documentary.

The Fionavar Tapestry

The Fionavar Tapestry by Guy Gavriel Kay
It has taken me over  a year, but I've finally finished #The_Fionavar_Tapestry by Guy Gavriel Kay.

It is a mother of a book (its actually a mother of 3 books in one), and was one of the best books I've ever read.

I am not, by any account, a quick reader.  Combine that with the fact that as soon as I'm on a project, the only things I ever seem to have time to read are 22 minute scripts or Google News (or anything in Allure, Glamour or People Magazine).

I started this book during production on two shows, several commercials, my trip to London and the brand refresh at the CBC... so needless to say, not a lot of "reading time".

But over the last week the intense desire came over me to hunker down and finish this masterpiece, and I'm so glad I did.

If you want to learn more about the author, you can check out his Wikipedia page.  Some quick points of interest - he's Canadian (rock on!), a segment of this book takes place on the U of T campus (shut up!) and he's just all around awesome (awesome!)!

A must read if you ever come across it.

Now I wonder who owns the rights to produce it and have they started production designs, 'cuz man this would be awesome to put to see on the big screen.....

Dirtgirl Just Keeps on Going!

dirgirworld Nominated for Shaw Rocket Prize

an image from "dirtgirlworld", DHX Media

Out of all the projects I've ever had the pleasure to work on, DGW has by far been nominated and / or won more awards than any other!

Its the little show that could!

So needless to say, I'm totally thrilled to post that DGW has been nominated as one of the 2011 Finalists for the Shaw Rocket Prize.

What is the Rocket Prize?  Well very good question!

The Rocket Prize awards the best of the best in TV and supporting digital content for kids.  It is actually the Shaw Rocket Prize, and includes a $50,000.00 winner take all award (which is apparently the largest prize of its kind in Canada).  The annual prize is awarded to the best independently produced Canadian children's, youth or family program.

Needless to say, I'm pretty proud about it.

I must give a big shout out to the DGW Team who worked together at Spin VFX (these guys were The Best - Ever!), as well as a big shout out to Janice Walker and the team at DHX Media.  Congratulations to everyone!

View from the New office

Well, really, its what my computer sees of me at the new office - but we're in, and we're very happy!

Brett is crazy busy with prep for launch in the new year ('launch of what?' you may ask... you'll just have to stay tuned!), and I'm between CBC Sports and the New Office for at least the next little while.

What fun.

Shout out to Aaron Pozzo who I bumped into the other day in the hood!  If you haven't come across it yet, check out Good group of guys, good work.

Happy Friday folks, and Happy Thanksgiving!

Salesman Pete

For those of you who haven't seen it, you must check out this beautiful short entitled "Salesman Pete".

For anyone who has worked in a mix-media production, you know the challenges of doing it, and doing it well. This is such a lovely example of CG and 2D working seamlessly together.

Just gorgeous!

Sweet little trailer for Michael Slack's new book "Monkey Truck"

This is really sweet.

I came across this while doing my Twitter feed.

This is a trailer for Michael Slack's new book "Monkey Truck".  I did not know they did trailers for books, but as my friends will tell you, I am a junky for trailers, so having a new theme of trailers to look at can't be a bad thing!

Lovely illustration style, sweet idea

And in Batman news....

Rotten Tomatoes, amongst others, is reporting that Anne Hathaway will play Selina Kyle (Catwoman) and Tom Hardy as Bane.

Angry Birds - the TV Series.

I suspect over the last year, you were either consumed by the "Angry Birds" iphone app, or were, what I like to call, an "Angry Birds Widower", meaning you lost a loved one to it!

Well now you can get an extra dose of Angry Birds, as Rovio has just announced a TV series on the ever popular game is in the works.

Digital Trends is reporting not only is  series in the works, but a console game is due, along with a toy line.  If you are a writer, they are looking for you.

Update on an Artist!

Its always awesome to share good news!

One of our Featured Artists, and last months Showcased Artist, Drew Fortier, will be leaving Toronto at the end of the month to go work in London England with this Director dude named Tim Burton!

Drew will be working as a member of the camera crew on the next Tim Burton Stop-motion Feature!

If the last name isn't a hint, Drew is my brother, so I write this with some level of sisterly pride. But besides that, anyone who has tried knows that breaking into the Stop-motion Feature Film Industry when you come from a series background is a real kick in the teeth.

Congratulations Drew! Have a wicked time, and show Tim Burton how its done!!

Well, its got to begin somewhere...

This would be the official kick-off to! (also found at

This blog will be a bit about me and what I've been up to. Check out my portfolio page for some of those details.

However, this will also be about the Animation and Visual Effects community that I've lived in for the last 13 years. I'll be showcasing artists and talent who I have worked with in the past, and who I adore. You can see their details under the "Featured Artists" column to the right. Be sure to check back as this list grows!

I'll also be doing a Showcased Artist each month. This month is the amazing Andre E-R, and you can check his work out further under the Showcased Artist Page.

I'll also be branching out to artists who are new to my immediate community, but whose work I really respect (look for that column in the future).

Interested in being featured? Feel free to email me through the blog.

Are you a Producer or Director looking for artists? Shoot me an email, I might be able to find someone for you!

Are you an artist looking for work? Be sure to check out my twitter feed (the link is on the blog, but you can also find it below the blog) for industry job postings, news and events.

All the best, and thanks for watching!
